Community Newsletter

Dear Neighbour,

This past week at Queen’s Park, the Minister of Education introduced deeply concerning legislation that represents yet another centralization of power by the Ford government.

The new education reforms will have real impacts on students, families, and educators here in Davenport and across Ontario. Rather than focusing on meaningful investments in classrooms, teachers, and student supports, the changes appear aimed at consolidating control and limiting the voices of parents, trustees and local communities.

I’ve heard from many families who are already worried about education cuts and changes that will eliminate access to critical programs and supports at local Davenport public schools. Parents have raised concerns about planned closures and relocations of specialized classrooms, as well as the ongoing shortage of staff to support students with special needs. These are not abstract policy decisions—they directly affect whether our children can learn in safe, inclusive, and supportive environments close to home.

This newsletter includes more information on these harmful education reforms, the impact of cuts on some Davenport schools, and additional updates from the Ontario Legislature.

These education reforms and cuts come while we learn that the Ford government is spending $28.9 million to purchase a private jet for Doug Ford. This demonstrates how out-of-touch the Ford government is, and I will continue to voice my opposition and take action against these grossly misplaced priorities.

As we continue this work, I also want to recognize Earth Day, which is just around the corner. Thank you to the Davenport communities and neighbours who will come together this weekend for local cleanup events in many of our shared spaces. You’ll find details on some of these events in this newsletter if you are interested in taking a local action for our environment.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Marit Stiles

Updates from the Legislature

My Opposition to Sweeping, Ineffective Proposed Education Reforms

The Ford government has been consistently failing public education since 2018, and we recently learned that 300 teacher jobs are being cut at the Toronto District School Board.

On top of these teacher cuts, this week, the Minister of Education announced a series of sweeping education reforms that will further limit the role of trustees, control budgets and appointments and shut parents out of their child’s school and education.

These reforms are not about students or improving outcomes in our schools - they are about centralizing power and insider appointments. As Davenport’s former TDSB Trustee, and a parent myself, I know that students don’t need these reforms. They need more teachers, better supports, and real investment in their classrooms.

Speaking Out Against the Local Impact of Education Cuts

Special education in Ontario is in crisis, and the Ford government continues to cut and dismantle essential supports and services.  Our public education system needs to provide students, families and educators with the supports they need and deserve. Below is a summary of some issues right here in Davenport that I have been working on with constituents.

St. Matthew Catholic School – Closure of MEDD Classroom
My office has heard from many parents who are concerned about the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s decision to close the Multiple Exceptionalities/Developmental Disabilities (MEDD) program at St. Matthew Catholic School in Davenport.

Parents are urging both the TCDSB and the Ministry of Education to reverse the decision to relocate the program to a school much farther away. They have also raised concerns about the lack of meaningful consultation with affected families. Keeping the program within the school community would provide important stability for students, allowing them to remain in a familiar and supportive environment.

Other Davenport Education Issues and Concerns

These reforms and cuts are having real impacts on schools in Davenport, and my office has heard from parents advocating on behalf of several schools. Parents have heard that there will be cuts to classrooms, specifically those serving students with special needs. Parents are also concerned that the Ford government wants to close underutilized TDSB schools in the area so that they can sell the land to developers.

Take Action

If you have concerns about a school in Davenport, please reach out to my constituency office for guidance and support on how to organize, advocate and take action on behalf of your child and their school. You can contact the office at [email protected]

I’m Bringing a Vote to Ban Surveillance Pricing

Every time you search something online, use a grocery app, or order an Uber, corporations are collecting your data. Then they use AI-powered algorithms to decide the maximum price you’ll pay, and charge you that. This is called surveillance pricing and right now grocery giants are partnering with tech companies to use electronic shelf labels and secret algorithms to charge different people different prices for the same product.

Watch my video that explains predatory pricing:

I believe this surveillance pricing is predatory, and that’s why I am bringing a vote to the Ontario Legislature to ban this practice in our province. Manitoba’s NDP government become the first province in Canada to ban surveillance pricing, and I believe that we can do the same here in Ontario.

You can take action. Click here to tell every Conservative MPP to Vote YES on my motion to Ban Predatory Surveillance Pricing.

Save OSAP – over 100,000 emails sent!

The fight to Save OSAP continues and it's growing. To-date, over 100,000 emails have been sent to the Ford government demanding they reverse the OSAP cuts.

I believe that no student should have to choose between an education and a lifetime of debt.

Let’s keep the pressure on! Take action at SaveOSAP.ca and stand with students and families across Ontario who deserve a government that lets them get ahead.

Dear Neighbour,

As we welcome the arrival of Spring, many in our community are marking important cultural and spiritual celebrations. Both Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz are occasions that represent renewal, joy, and the gathering of family and community. Across Toronto, Ontario and Canada - and around the world - families and friends are coming together to share meals, express gratitude, and celebrate new beginnings.

These celebrations remind us that faith is lived in community. It calls us to look beyond ourselves and ask what we owe one another, and how we can care for our neighbours. At a time when many people are facing uncertainty, these values of generosity, solidarity, and compassion feel especially important.

The Ontario Legislature resumes March 23. I’m ready to return to Queen’s Park to represent Davenport on the issues that matter most right now — from the Ford government’s recently proposed changes to OSAP and the Freedom of Information Act, to the 2026 Budget, to the broader challenges facing our healthcare system, our schools, and the overall cost of living. I will continue pushing for greater affordability, stronger public services, and more transparency and accountability from the Ford government.

In this newsletter, you’ll find important updates on many of the issues I’ll be raising during the Spring Session at Queen’s Park, as well as information about what’s happening here in our Davenport community. As always, my team and I are here to help - please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need support or would like to share your thoughts.

Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Updates from the Legislature

Returning to Queen’s Park (finally!)

After an extended (and unnecessarily long) break, the Ontario Legislature is set to resume on Monday, March 23. Based on feedback that we have received from Davenport residents, and people from across Ontario, I am ready to challenge the Ford government to focus on what really matters to people in 2026.

If I were the Premier of Ontario, these are the issues that I would prioritize at Queen’s Park in the weeks ahead:

  • Maintaining OSAP loans and grants for eligible students
  • The underfunding of our public health care system and our schools
  • Making life more affordable and ensuring our kids, and everyone, have a solid future in this province
  • A full Metrolinx inquiry

I believe these are the priorities that a government should have in Ontario right now, and I will raise these and many more issues at Queen’s Park.

Share your Voice

I’ve heard from many Davenport residents who have completed our survey to let me know the top issues that you would like me to raise when the Legislature resumes. The top issues raised here in Davenport have included healthcare, housing, groceries, education, and accessing services for seniors.

What issues are top of mind for you and your family? Please complete this survey to let me know the top issues that you would like me to bring forward in this session of the Ontario Legislature.

What is the Ford Government Hiding? –  Let’s Stop the Proposed changes to the Freedom of Information Act

My constituency office has heard from many Davenport residents who are deeply concerned with the Ford government’s proposed changes to the Freedom of Information Act. Opposition parties, the media and members of the public regularly file Freedom of Information requests to shed more light on government decision making.

Under the proposed new rules, it would have been impossible to uncover the Greenbelt scandal or the preferential treatment for a private spa at Ontario Place. I believe that an honest government doesn’t change the rules to hide from the public. I will continue to speak out against these proposed changes to the Freedom of Information Act to get to the bottom of what the Ford government is trying to hide.

Watch my new video that explains this issue and why it matters:

Launch of Budget 2026 Report Card

Budget Day has been announced for the first week back at Queen’s Park – it will be Thursday, March 26, 2026. I have launched a Budget Report Card with our Shadow Finance Minister MPP Jessica Bell. This Budget Report Card will measure the Ford government’s priorities with Budget 2026.

I believe this budget is an important moment for Davenport and the entire province of Ontario. The Budget Report Card will assess whether the Ford government's budget passes the following tests:

  • Does it lower the cost of rent and groceries?
  • Does it fix health care and education?
  • Does it build the homes you can afford?
  • Does it create good jobs and opportunities?
  • Does it spend your money responsibly?

We will release a full Budget 2026 Report Card – stay tuned!

Amazing Turnout at Save OSAP Townhall

I co-hosted the Ontario NDP Save OSAP Townhall, at Lithuanian House, near Bloor and Dundas. With hundreds of people in attendance, we brought together students, parents and advocates to fight back against the Ford government’s cuts to OSAP. It was an amazing turnout, and I heard directly from many individuals who will have to choose between an education and a lifetime of debt.

We listened, we shared ideas and we organized to demand better for students in Ontario. I will continue to call on the Ford government to reverse these proposed changes to OSAP.

Dear Neighbour,

This week, Ontario students staged mass protests over the Ford government’s OSAP cuts.

Since these cuts were announced, I have met with and heard from countless people who are very concerned about the impact OSAP cuts will have on their lives.

As a mother of two young women, one of whom is still in post-secondary education, it frustrates me to see what the Ford government is doing to the lives of young people. I came to Ontario from Newfoundland as an undergraduate student. Like many others, I was able to build a life here because of the doors this province has opened for me.

Under today’s Ford government, these opportunities are not available to young people, and cuts to OSAP could not come at a worse time for Ontario youth and Ontario families. We have the highest rates of youth unemployment in Canada, and this forces students to choose between an education or a lifetime of debt, when they should be focused on investing in their future.

That’s why we have launched a campaign to fight back against OSAP cuts and we need your help. You will find all of the details in this newsletter. Check out the Save OSAP website to get involved and share your story.

I believe that if we work together we can put a stop to these proposed cuts.

We are preparing to return to the Ontario Legislature on March 23, and my next newsletter will include a full summary of key issues and plans. This newsletter includes information on how you can complete a survey to let me know what provincial issues are most important to you.

With International Women’s Day coming up this Sunday, March 8, I want to take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge the incredible women in Davenport and throughout Toronto and Ontario who make a meaningful difference every day.

And a reminder that Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday, March 8.

Have a great weekend.

Marit Stiles

Let's Save OSAP

Students Stage Mass Protest over OSAP Cuts

This week, students organized a rally at Queen’s Park to protest the Ford government’s OSAP cuts.

I joined the hundreds of students who rallied outside Queen's Park to Save OSAP.

Students in Davenport and across Ontario are already facing sky-high rents and fewer opportunities. Yet the Ford government is making it worse by gutting OSAP and raising tuition. These OSAP cuts will force students to choose between an education and a lifetime of debt. Ontario’s youth should not have to pay this price.

Please read below for how YOU can get involved in the Save OSAP campaign today

Dear Neighbours,

In addition to cheering on Team Canada at the Winter Olympics, I’m preparing to return to Queen’s Park. (In fact, we were supposed to return to the Ontario Legislature last week, but the Ford government extended the Winter Break by an additional month.)

As your MPP for Davenport and Leader of the Official Opposition, I have been listening closely to what matters most to people in our community. I will bring your issues and voices with me when the Legislature reconvenes in March.

My Constituency Office has received many calls and emails about the Ford government’s recent cuts to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). At a time when tuition and the overall cost of living continue to rise, students cannot afford reductions to their financial support. These OSAP cuts could not come at a worse time, and students in Davenport and across Ontario deserve better. You can read more in this newsletter about the saveOSAP.ca campaign that we launched recently.

Whether you are concerned about the OSAP cuts, or another issue affecting you and your family, I encourage you to reach out in the coming weeks. Your stories, emails and conversations inform the work I bring to Queen’s Park. Thank you to the community members who have participated in town halls and shared their ideas - your engagement strengthens our democracy and helps to shape the future of the neighbourhood and province.

As we head into the final weekend of the Winter Olympics, I know many residents in Davenport will be cheering on Team Canada!

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Marit Stiles

Updates from the Legislature

Let's Save OSAP - Take Action

Over the past week, my Davenport constituency office has heard from many people who disagree with the recent cuts to OSAP announced by the Ford government. Young people across Ontario will be forced into debt as a result of these cuts, when education should set them up for success. This creates a vicious cycle that prevents people from getting ahead.

Share your Voice - Preparing to Return to Queen’s Park

The Legislature resumes on March 23, and I remain committed to raising the issues that matter the most to the people of Davenport. Whether it is the rising price of groceries and essentials, finding an affordable home, being able to afford post-secondary education, finding affordable childcare spaces, accessing seniors’ services, or getting timely access to healthcare, I know that people are dealing with a lot.

I’m focused on making life better for people, and I am ready to return to Queen’s Park to continue fighting for what’s important to Davenport residents.

Dear Neighbours,

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it offers meaningful opportunities for connection and reflection here in Davenport.

As we observe Black History Month, we take time to honour Black Ontarians whose leadership, creativity and resilience have helped shape our community. It is a time to recommit ourselves to the continuing work to build a more just and inclusive province for everyone.

This February also includes several important cultural and spiritual observances, including Lunar New Year, the beginning of Ramadan, Losar, and Family Day.  Each of these occasions offers an opportunity to come together, reflect, and look ahead with intention. They remind us of the richness and diversity that makes Davenport such a vibrant place to call home. I hope many of you are able to spend time connecting with the family, friends, neighbours, and communities that matter most to you, and that these moments offer space for rest, reflection, and a sense of belonging as we move through the winter season together.

It is an honour to represent such a thoughtful, engaged, and welcoming community, and I look forward to continuing our work together. This newsletter contains updates on many exciting initiatives across Davenport, Toronto and Ontario.

And – as a small reminder that spring is on its way - the days are getting longer, and, earlier this week, Wiarton Willie predicted only six more weeks of winter….

Go Team Canada!

Sincerely,

Marit Stiles
MPP for Davenport

Updates from the Legislature

FAO Report – Sounding the Alarm on Funding Cuts

The Ontario NDP sounded the alarm following the most recent Financial Accountability Office (FAO) Capital Spending Plan Report. The FAO found that the Ford government is continuing to make cuts to key services, including affordable housing, hospitals and school repairs. Here is a summary of some of the concerning findings in the report:

  • Further cuts to affordable housing funding, despite 85,000 people homeless and rising unemployment
  • A plan to eliminate 10,000 health care workers, despite long wait times at hospitals and the need for jobs
  • More cuts to public education, leaving overcrowded classrooms and poorly maintained school buildings in our children’s future

I will continue to push the Ford government to create plans that protect jobs, and provide a good quality of life for the people of Ontario.

Stop the Education Takeovers – Emergency Townhall

There have been more concerning public education developments as schools and classrooms here in Davenport and across Ontario remain underfunded.

First, the provincially appointed TDSB Supervisor has reversed a decision to cap class sizes for Grades 4 to 8. And, the Ford government has taken over Peel District School Board and put them under the same ministerial supervision as the TDSB and TCDSB.

Placing school boards under supervision does not improve student outcomes, it only serves to block parents from being a part of important decisions about the future of education that are being made. We need to focus on properly funding our schools.

NDP MPP Chandra Pasma (Ottawa West-Nepean), Shadow Minister for Education, has organized an Emergency Education Town Hall to summarize what has happened, why it matters and what we can do next.

Intimate Partner Violence Virtual Town Hall

The rates of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in Ontario are on the rise. Members of the Davenport community are welcome to attend a Virtual Town Hall about IPV to discuss actions that need to be taken in Ontario. Join MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre), Shadow Attorney General, with responsibility for 2SLGBTQI+ Issues, and MPP Alexa Gilmour (Parkdale-High Park), Shadow Minister for Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, along with a panel of experts for this important conversation.

My Statement Regarding MPP Doly Begum

I released the following statement on MPP Doly Begum's resignation:

"… I received Doly Begum’s notice of resignation as MPP for Scarborough Southwest. I want to thank Doly for her service and wish her well. "Our party has been proud to represent the good people of Scarborough Southwest for the past eight years and look forward to continuing that representation. "I want to especially thank her constituency staff who, as New Democrats, continue their excellent work serving constituents."

Setting Priorities for the Next Legislative Session

I met with the Ontario NDP Caucus to start to prepare for the next Legislative Session, which begins March 23, 2026. Since the house rose in December, we have been out there, listening to communities about where people are at, and what matters to them right now. We are bringing these ideas together, and are working through real solutions and plans that address the challenges that people are facing right here in Davenport and across Ontario. Click here to watch the full press conference.

Call for End to Ontario Contracts Serving ICE

I recently made an announcement that called for an end to Ontario's manufacturing contract with ICE — to ensure that both Ontario and Canada have no part in the atrocities being committed in the United States.

In Ontario, I believe that we need to find stable opportunities for Ontario manufacturers to strengthen Canada, not increase our reliance on the United States.

Metrolinx Updates

TTC Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown LRT is now Open

I’m sure many of you heard the news that the TTC Line 5/Eglinton Crosstown LRT begins a phased opening this Sunday, February 8th. I know that there are many households and businesses in Davenport who have experienced years of hardship as a result of this delayed project, and we will continue to demand a public inquiry into Metrolinx.

I hope that we see a smooth opening of Line 5. With 2 stops serving Davenport (Fairbank and Caledonia) let’s hope that residents and businesses alike finally start experiencing the benefits of this new transit line.
