Hello Neighbour,

It has been a very busy first week back at Queen’s Park and I have been grilling the Premier and his government on the issues that matter most to you – funding for school boards and addressing the crisis in our classrooms, affordable and reliable transit, and increasing access to affordable childcare spaces so parents can get back to work. Read on to learn how I’m fighting for you and our neighbours in Davenport.

If you’ve walked or biked near Sterling Rd, you might be familiar with the smell of chocolate in the area. Over 400 dedicated workers keep the Nestle factory on Sterling Rd operating every day, and on Sunday, these workers went on strike to demand better wages that will meet the current cost of living. I stand with these workers and support their demands for better.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and I’m looking forward to spending time with my family this weekend. Mothers come in all forms, and I hope you get to celebrate the mothers and mother-figures in your life this weekend.

Happy Mother’s Day, have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Neighbour,

I hope you had a chance to catch a few moments of the solar eclipse on Monday. Despite the clouds, caught a glimpse and it was an experience to remember. I had the pleasure of spending time in Davenport over the long weekend in March, with family visiting from Ottawa and Montreal, and walked in the Good Friday Procession with many members of our community.

This week marks the end of Ramadan and a very happy Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating. This week, as you gather with family and community to celebrate Eid, I hope you find peace, comfort and moments of joy amongst each other.

I am so honoured, humbled and inspired by my colleagues NDP MPPs Lisa Gretzky, Kristyn Wong Tam, Peggy Sattler and Jill Andrew, their staff and the advocates from across Ontario who contributed to Bill 173- the Intimate Partner Violence as an Epidemic Act. I am proud to have seen such a strong showing of support from Davenport and across the province. During the debate, the galleries were filled with strong, diverse and dedicated advocates, survivors and family members impacted by Intimate Partner Violence, and we share this moment with each of you. Declaring IPV an epidemic was the first recommendation of the Renfrew Coroners Inquest and is a first step to saving lives and protecting Ontarians. Now we need the resources and supports an epidemic demands.

Official Opposition calls for Auditor General probe to investigate fees at for profit health care clinics

On Monday, I asked the premier how this government can continue to expand for-profit healthcare while millions of Ontarians are still without a primary care provider, and the entire province is facing a cost-of-living crisis. Official Opposition Critic for Healthcare, France Gelinas will be asking the Auditor General to investigate the for-profit providers. Everyone in Ontario has the right to get health care with their OHIP card, not their credit card. Instead of holding bad actors accountable, this Government is encouraging private clinics to force Ontarians to pay for health care that should be free.

Cutting Red Tape to Build More Homes Act

I was disappointed this week when the government continued to ignore top recommendations of its own Housing Affordability Task Force, including legalizing fourplexes and four-storey multiplexes in all neighbourhoods. The Cutting Red Tape to Build More Homes act has fallen short of what experts know is desperately needed to help address the urgent need for affordable housing. What’s missing? Real rent control and government investment in non-market housing. Largely, what this bill does is attempt to back-track on the government’s previous bad decisions, but it doesn’t offer solutions that will protect Ontarians from Illegal evictions or stabilize the rental market. I will continue to propose, bold, long-term solutions like:

  • Establishing Homes Ontario and provide financing and access to public land to build affordable housing
  • Allowing fourplexes as-of-right in all neighbourhoods everywhere in Ontario
  • Protecting existing affordable housing by bringing in strong rent control

Bill 173 Declaring Intimate Partner Violence an Epidemic Act passes second reading

On Wednesday, April 10th Bill 173, The Intimate Partner Violence as and Epidemic Act 2024 passed to second reading. This is a welcome first step – but it’s far from the end of the line. We had almost 200 advocates, survivors, and front-line workers join us at Queen’s Park, and they have been crystal clear in their demands. The time for action is now. The time for believing and supporting survivors of intimate partner violence is now. We don’t need more half-measures or studies. The work has been done. The Official Opposition and people across Ontario have spoken. It’s time for this government to finally take this seriously.

Local Parent Organizing Brings strong message to TDSB Trustee Vote April 4

Davenport parents and activists joined their Neighbours and education advocates across the GTA to show solidarity for a No Cuts Budget at the TDSB. Proposed cuts to programming have been officially delayed, at least until 2025-26. While the trustees did not vote in favour of an entirely “no cuts” budget, Provincial underfunding has been officially recognized. Considering the continuing "structural deficit" whereby the hard costs of delivering education (e.g., salaries, benefits, special ed, etc.) exceed the grants issued by the province, trustees voted unanimously to issue a letter to the Ministry of Education requesting more funding. Thank you to MPPs Kristyn Wong-Tam and MPP Jessica Bell for representing our Caucus at the TDSB Rally April 2nd and thank you to The Toronto Schools Caregiver Coalition for their organizing as well as the folks at fundourschools.ca.

Parents in Davenport are saying enough is enough. The Toronto Schools Caregiver Coalition (TSCC) is a parent-led group organizing to stop the endless cycle of education cuts that TDSB students have endured annually since 1996, by calling for changes to the way provincial funding is allocated to school boards. Many students, parents, teachers, education workers, and trustees agree that the provincial grant is not enough.

Aura Freedom International leading the way for organizations to declare IPV an epidemic

Thank you to Marissa and the folks at Aura Freedom for the contribution you made to declaring Intimate Partner Violence an epidemic in the City of Toronto in July 2023 and for showing up to support Bill 173 in the Provincial Legislature. Aura Freedom International has been working tirelessly for a decade to address systemic issues that contribute to gender-based violence. Aura Freedom International is a Davenport-based grassroots organization working in Canada and beyond to end violence against women and human trafficking through advocacy and education. In addition to leading the way declaring IPV an epidemic in Toronto, last November, Aura Freedom International hosted a powerful femicide exhibition “For Her” at It’s Ok studios on Queen Street in honour of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women. Check out aurafreedom.org for more information on their activities that range from education and awareness campaigns, workshops, survivor support, advocacy and policy work and grassroots community research. I look forward to more amazing opportunities to support this work.

Graciosa Community Centre Celebrating 44 years!

Congratulations to Graciosa Community Centre on their 44th anniversary this past weekend. My staff were delighted to join in the celebration. Manuel Quadros highlighted here with board members giving a heartwarming speech during the night.

In 1980, a group of people from Graciosa decided to form an organization to serve all those who hailed from this Azorean island. The intent was to have a space where they could celebrate their culture and reminisce about the land they had left behind. The organization grew quickly and, two years later, it purchased its headquarters in what was then the heart of the Portuguese community in Toronto, on Dundas and Dovercourt.

Hello Neighbour,

It has been a busy week at the Legislature. On Tuesday, the Minister of Finance released the government’s 2024 Budget. Behind the numbers and the balance sheets, budgets are a statement on what matters to the government, and who’s important.

This budget was an opportunity for Doug Ford’s Conservatives to deliver solutions on affordable housing and better health care – to deliver change. But what we got just goes to show how deeply out of touch and out of ideas Doug Ford’s Conservatives are.

If you’re looking for a family doctor, or a young person looking to find a place to live, or you’re struggling with the cost of living, this budget is not for you.

This week, my constituency team hosted a Youth and Affordability round table. Youth-focused organizations, university, and high school students from Davenport came together to discuss the challenges that young people face in this affordability and housing crisis. The expertise and lived experiences shared will help us understand the problems and come up with real solutions to help youth and young people create a better future for themselves.

Earlier this week, hundreds of workers at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) went on strike. I support these workers in their fight for better wages and increased protections for part-time workers.

As we head into the long weekend, I look forward to the many community events happening in Davenport. Wishing everyone celebrating a very happy Easter weekend… don't miss the beautiful Good Friday Procession that winds through the Dundas West/College West area. And to those recognizing Ramadan, I wish you a fulfilling last 10 days.

Have a great long weekend,

Marit Stiles

Transgender Day of Visibility

March 31 is the Transgender Day of Visibility. Founded by Rachel Crandall-Crocker in 2009, It is a day to honour 2Spirit, trans, and non-binary lives and recognize their leadership and contributions. Trans and non-binary people experience significant discrimination, bullying, negative mental health, and violence. For community members who are also Black, Indigenous, people of colour, disabled, youth – the levels of discrimination are even more significant.

The Official Opposition has presented Private Members’ Bills and motions that aim to solidify the rights and protections for trans community members. We honour the Transgender Day of Visibility and will continue to advocate for the rights of trans people everywhere.

Ford Government Offers No Relief to Ontarians with 2024 Budget

The provincial government tabled their 2024 budget this week and it could not be more out of touch with the struggles people are facing in Davenport and across the province. The Premier and his Conservative government delivered a budget full of re-announcements and uninspired half-measures. They want to stick to a status quo that has failed people.

The budget shows a $3 billion deficit in 2023, with a projected $9 billion deficit next year. New commitments are a $200 million Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund and $46 million for GTA community safety, including 4 police helicopters.

What your Official Opposition was looking for in this budget:

  • Strategic Investments in public healthcare to keep hospital emergency rooms open and recruit and retain health care workers
  • Addressing staffing shortages in public schools and reverse cuts to get kids the supports they need
  • Keep our colleges and universities open with stable funding and increased operating grants
  • Get the government back in the business of building homes with our Homes Ontario plan and end exclusionary zoning
  • Lift people out of legislated poverty by doubling ODSP and OW rates
  • Helping families get the childcare they need by funding the long-delayed $10-a-day childcare

The Premier and his government continue to listen to and prioritize the needs of private corporations and wealthy developers at the expense of everyday Ontarians who are trying to support themselves and their families. I will continue to fight for you and the homes, health care, and hope that people are looking for.

Ford Votes “No” to Increasing Access to Primary Care Doctors

I have heard from so many community members who don’t have access to a primary care doctor. Amid this chronic shortage, family physicians are spending an average of 20 hours a week doing paperwork: burgeoning insurance forms, sick notes, and requests for prescription.

Last week I tabled a motion that would provide support to primary care providers to free up their time to see patients instead of pushing paperwork. If every family doctor across Ontario had access to an integrated primary care team with sufficient nurses, administrative and interdisciplinary health staff to reduce the load of paperwork, the time freed up would be equivalent to adding 2,000 doctors to the system. An estimated additional 2 million Ontarians can have a family doctor.

But the Premier and his Minister of Health voted “no” to this solution. I will continue to fight until every single person in Ontario has a family doctor.

Conservative hypocrisy – Ford government spends more than half of 2023 budget on partisan ads

CBC News revealed that the Conservative government spent nearly $8 million on “It’s Happening Here”; a glitzy ad campaign that aired during the Superbowl, the Grammy’s and the NHL all-star game.

Why does this matter? In 2015, the Liberal government changed the law to allow taxpayer funded partisan ads ahead of the election. At the time, Conservative MPP, and now Deputy Premier, Sylvia Jones, tabled a bill to reverse those changes and restore the Auditor General’s authority to review and approve government advertising. Doug Ford even promised to make the change in his 2018 Conservative party platform.

According to the Auditor General’s annual 2023 report, the Conservatives spent $20.8 million or 72 per cent of its total ad budget for 2023.

The hard-working people of this province deserve a government that puts every dollar into making their life easier. People deserve timely and efficient access to quality health care when they need it. They deserve affordable housing in neighbourhoods they want to live in. But after six years under Doug Ford’s Conservatives, life has only become harder and more expensive. Instead of addressing that, they are blowing millions of tax dollars on frivolous partisan ads to tell you just how good you have it.

Your Official Opposition will continue to hold this government accountable so that every dollar spent works for you.

NDP reveals Ford's Phase 2 for Ontario Place: Filling in the lake

I am calling on the Ford government to come clean about their plan for Ontario Place as Global News reports on documents obtained through Freedom of Information (FOI) that reveals evidence of “Phase II” plans to fill in the lake at east island.

This is more evidence that Premier Ford has been keeping the public in the dark about their plans for Ontario Place from the beginning. If it wasn’t bad enough that they are using hundreds of millions of public dollars to subsidize a private luxury spa and parking lot, now they’re looking to pave over part of the lake.

Your Official Opposition will continue to use every tool available to keep Ontario Place public.

Ford tells Ontarians they don’t deserve homes they can afford

The Premier continues to deny the recommendations made by the provincial government’s own Housing Affordability Task Force to build fourplexes in communities. Legalizing four-storey multiplexes will unlock immense housing potential right across our province. This is why the Official Opposition has been calling for it for years, and why it was one of the top recommendations from the Premier’s own Housing Affordability Task Force

The Premier told Ontarians that if you cannot afford a single detached home, you are not welcome in your neighbourhood. For many people here in Davenport, this is a gut-punch for those currently struggling to afford a home.

I will keep fighting for real solutions that let people afford homes that meet their needs and their budgets, in their own communities.

It's Time to Speak Up and Speak Out Against Education Cuts

Liberal and Conservative governments have been underfunding public education in Ontario for years, and the Ford government is no different. The TDSB is facing a $20.8 million dollar deficit for the 2024-2025 school year which means cuts to after school programs, staff, and more.

The TSCC is asking trustees to pass a 'No Cuts' draft budget on April 4th. During the TDSB budgeting meetings on April 2nd and 4th, neighbours, parents, students, and education workers are gathering together to take action.

Theatre Centre Celebrating 10 years in a permanent home!

Since 1979, The Theatre Centre has been creating and supporting innovative live performances. Like many arts organizations, The Theatre Centre has evolved and moved from place to place over its 45-year history. When former Artistic Director Franco Boni, former Councillor Adam Giambrone, and community group Active 18 saw the fast-changing landscape on West Queen West, it was clear they would have to get creative to make sure The Theatre Centre could maintain its presence in the community.

The former Carnagie Library at Queen and Lisgar, a dedicated heritage site, would become The Theatre Centre’s new permanent home. Through hard work by the community, The Theatre Centre was able to secure a long-term lease and have called 1115 Queen St. West home for the past 10 years.

Celebrating their 10-year anniversary The Theatre Centre has launched 10 programs that investigate what this building can be. In addition to Residency and Comedy is Art, there will be a block party, TV-binge, barbecue, town hall, and more.

Congratulations to Artistic & General Director Aislinn Rose, Associate Director Liza Paul and Managing Director Audrey Kwan for this incredible program and for maintaining such a dynamic, accessible and vital space in Davenport.

Hello Neighbour,

If you and your family have been on March Break this week, I hope you were able to enjoy time with your family and the unseasonably warm weather.

Though the Legislature was also on a Constituency Week, the Conservatives have been busy making life harder for you and people across this province. Information obtained by our NDP team has shed more light on the Greenbelt Grab, raising more questions and making clear the Premier’s hands were all over this scheme. And while Ford is helping to line the pockets of the wealthy, many are waiting years to seek justice at the Landlord and Tenant Board. Details on this and more below in my Legislative updates.

For people observing, Ramadan Mubarak to our Muslim neighbours in Davenport. Ramadan is a holy month for fasting, prayer, and introspection. For those who don’t know, we are fortunate to have the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre International in Davenport. Since 1994, the Dawah Centre has been welcoming people to learn and find community with each other.

I’m looking forward to sharing Iftar dinners with community members during this holy month.

Have a great weekend,

Updates from the Legislature

Conservatives used code names to hide plans to cut up the Greenbelt – “Special Project G”

In case you missed The Narwhal’s report, documents obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request show the use of code words across thousands of pages of government records referring to the Greenbelt grab. Terms like “G*,” “Special Project” and “SP” were found in several records, including correspondence between the ministry and the Premier’s office.

In some emails, a reference to the Greenbelt had been replaced with “G*” before being forwarded to Ryan Amato, the former chief of staff of former Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark.

What this looks like is intent to conceal—a creative use of code words to evade public scrutiny for what they clearly knew was wrong. For months, the Ford Conservatives claimed that there was nothing wrong with their Greenbelt grab. Clearly, they knew they had something to hide.

To learn more about what was found in the FOI documents, click hereAnd listen to my question to the Premier below.

Another day, another sole-sourced contract – Ford Conservatives shell out $26 million to digitize LTB

While over 53,000 people wait for their hearing date at the Landlord and Tenant Board, Ford and the Minister of the Attorney General are busy giving away $26 million in taxpayer dollars to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) through a sole-sourced contract that still hasn’t addressed the massive backlog of cases waiting to be resolved.

Since 2018, the average wait time to get a hearing date has increased to 325 days, compared to 32 days prior to Ford taking office.

In Davenport, people are waiting up to a year to get access to justice at the Landlord and Tenant Board. People are losing their homes and going into debt just to get by. Instead of helping people, this Premier and his government have been keeping themselves busy with lining the pockets of international corporations instead of helping people waiting for their time in court.

We need to address the backlog of cases so people can stay in their homes without fear of losing them.

Listen to my question to the Premier below.

Ford Conservatives under spending in childcare – Parents and service providers demand more

My partner and I could never have managed without our childcare centre. With two kids and two working parents, we relied so much on the expertise and care of RECEs at West End Parents Child Care Centre. I have been fighting for a universal, affordable, national childcare program for years. I know what a big difference it will make to parents, kids and our economy.

Last week, the Financial Accountability Office released their report and found that the Ford government allocated $146 million less than planned on childcare and early years programming, including the Province’s commitment to provide an average of $10-a-day childcare by 2025 (Expenditure Monitor 2023-24: Q3, FAO).

My office has heard from many parents in the community who are desperate to find affordable childcare spaces. Since the Ford government agreed to the federal plan to provide an average of $10/day childcare, this government has not held up their end of the deal, leaving parents scrambling to find a space that doesn’t leave them out of pocket thousands of dollars.

We have also heard from many RECEs, childcare workers and daycare providers that the province’s current plan is not sustainable, forcing many skilled and dedicated childcare workers to leave the profession to support their own families.

My colleague and Official Opposition Critic for Childcare, MPP Teresa Armstrong, has been pushing this government to do more to invest in our childcare workers and help parents right now by making the critical investments needed.

Listen to her question to the Minister of Education below.

Hello Neighbour,

Spring is around the corner and the days are getting longer. I’m looking forward to seeing the first few flower buds of Spring and warmer weather ahead.

I’ve been grilling the Premier and his government over the last couple of weeks on his decision to politicize our judicial process. What was once a gold-standard of appointing judges to Ontario Courts, is now at risk of turning into Trump-style patonage appointments. We are also seeing our universities and colleges at the brink and I’ve been demanding that the Premier and his government make the critical investments needed and to invest in mental health supports so that people can access care when they need it. More on this below.

This week, we also celebrated the International Day of Pink or Pink Shirt Day. I was proud to join my colleagues in supporting this wonderful initiative to stand against bullying and promote kindness.

Pink Shirt Day

On Wednesday February 28, we recognized Pink Shirt Day (also known as the International Day of Pink). Pink Shirt Day is an anti-bullying initiative that originated in Nova Scotia in 2007. The movement was inspired by an incident where two high school students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, organized a protest in support of a fellow student who had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. In response, Shepherd and Price distributed pink shirts to their classmates to wear the next day as a show of solidarity against bullying.

Since then, Pink Shirt Day has grown into a national campaign. People across the country wear pink shirts to symbolize their stand against bullying, promote kindness, and raise awareness about the impact of bullying on individuals. It encourages individuals and organizations to prevent bullying and promotes a culture of inclusivity, respect, and kindness in schools, workplaces, and communities. I am proud to wear my pink shirt with students, families, and people across the province and stand against bullying.

Students and Families Pay for Ford’s Crisis in Universities and Colleges

The Premier and his Minister of Colleges and Universities, MPP Jill Dunlop, have allowed bad actors to exploit students and families and have continued to cut funding in our post-secondary institutions, continuing a long history of under investment by Conservative and Liberal governments.

The Minister of Universities and Colleges announced that the government will be providing over $1 billion dollars to aid colleges and universities who are at the financial brink, but this aid is far from the amount that the provincial government’s own committee recommended, of $2.3 billion dollars, and this is before the federal government announced their cap on international students. Critic for Colleges and Universities, MPP Peggy Sattler commented, “Ford has been fully aware of how decades of chronic underfunding by Liberal and Conservative governments, and five years of Ford cuts, have pushed our postsecondary institutions to the brink. Now Ford’s rumoured investment is half what his own panel of experts have recommended

We need a government that will invest in our students and in our post-secondary institutions and address the financial barriers in accessing education. I will continue to raise this issue and demand more for students and families. Listen to my question to the Premier here.

Premier doubles down on patronage appointments to judicial appointments committee

The Premier is not backing down from his decision to appoint “...like-minded people” on the committee that recommends which lawyers should become Ontario judges.

Lawyers, legal experts and associations have expressed their deep concerns that this latest move by the Premier will threaten the independent process of appointing judges to Ontario courts, a process that has been praised as the gold-standard around the world.

My colleague, MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam and Critic for the Attorney General’s Office commented, “Under this government, we have seen our court system spiral into chaos. We have seen serious cases get thrown out because of double-bookings and lack of resources, survivors forced to re-live their trauma because of repeated delays. Instead of fixing the mess in our courts, the Attorney General is focused on using their majority to award partisan patronage appointments and erode people’s faith in our justice system."

The judicial system should be independent from government and any political party. Premier Ford and his government refuse to play by the rules, putting himself and his insider buddies first, and not prioritizing the many Ontarians who are waiting for access to justice. I will continue to push this government to prioritize you and the people of Ontario. Listen to my question to the Premier here.

Minister of Health hosts fundraiser instead of funding Mental Health Supports

Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, MPP Michael Tibollo hosted a meet and greet called, “Mental Health Mixer’, where tickets were $1000 each to attend.

When people are waiting over a year to access treatment for addictions, recovery, and mental health, when the overdose crisis is taking loved ones from families, this government is shameless promoting a cash-for-access culture that benefits only a wealthy few.

Children and families are waiting too long for access to supports and have to make the difficult decisions of paying out of pocket to access private support or driving hours away to access support elsewhere. This government has shown that the health and mental health of people across this province is not their priority.

We need real investments into mental health and addictions support. We need more trained health care and social workers to get into under-service communities. We need solutions now, not a government who prioritizes cash-for-access culture. Listen to my question to the Premier here.

Financial Empowerment and Problem Solving Program to End March 31

The Financial Empowerment and Problem Solving (FEPS) program was created to help low-income people file taxes and access existing benefits.

In 2023, West Neighbourhood House on Ossington Avenue and Dundas Street, was able to provide 2,113 low-income people with tax-filing support and financial problem-solving that resulted in $5,076,514 coming to those individuals and their families from various benefits they otherwise would not have received.

The government has announced that funding for this program will be end March 31, leaving thousands of people to find support else where. I will be writing to the Minister of Children, Community, and Social Services to ask that funding for this program continues so that low-income residents in Davenport can continue to access this essential program.

Register your rent and contribute to creating a more transparent rental market

The Ontario Rental Registry is an online database where tenants can anonymously register their rents. The purpose of the registry is to track rising rents across the province. This will lead to better, publicly-available housing data that can help protect and create more affordable housing. You can access the registry by going to rentalregistry.ca.

The rental registry is easy, quick and secure as it was designed to be compliant with SOC2 cybersecurity standards.

The Ontario Rental Registry has over 8,000 rents already registered. To register click here. And check out this map to see how thousands of people across the province have already contributed to creating more transparency across the sector.

Metrolinx Updates

Ontario's One Fare Program Active Across the GTHA

Many residents in Davenport have been calling on Metrolinx to implement fare intregration for years and now the Ontario's One Fare Program will allow transit riders to only pay once when connecting to and from the TTC and GO Transit, Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit, MiWay and York Region Transit.

How Ontario's One Fare Program works:

  • PRESTO automatically calculates a 100 per cent discount and applies it to a PRESTO card, credit or debit card or PRESTO in Google Wallet. Transit riders must tap on and off with the same card.
  • Transfers are valid for two hours for trips started on local transit and within three hours of the start of a GO Transit trip.
  • The payment method used to tap and pay a fare is a customer’s proof of payment. Riders approached for fare inspection will need to tap the card, phone or watch used on the inspection device.
  • For trips connecting between TTC and GO Transit, the TTC component of the trip will become free, regardless of travel direction (cost of TTC trip is discounted from overall trip cost).
  • For trips connecting between TTC and local transit systems, the second portion of the trip will become free (first payment will enable a two-hour free transfer across all systems).
